Description:

Info

Directly upgrading firmware on HPE Gen5 B-series non-director class switches from any Fabric OS (FOS) 7.4.0x version to any version of FOS 8.0.x leads to a disruptive cold recovery. This could cause a host to array connectivity outage if an alternate path is not available between the devices. After the firmware is loaded to the switch, it normally preforms a high availability reboot (HAreboot) as shown below. Example : All packages have been downloaded successfully. Firmware has been downloaded to the secondary partition of the switch. HA Rebooting ... Due to this issue, a reboot is preformed instead and is seen on the console. Example : All packages have been downloaded successfully. Firmware has been downloaded to the secondary partition of the switch. Broadcast message from root (pts/0) Sat Apr 1 12:49:05 2017... The system is going down for reboot NOW !! After the switch reboots, the RASlog shows the ports initializing shortly after the firmware commit begins due to the cold boot. Example : 2017/03/29-06:17:46, [SULB-1003], 58, CHASSIS, INFO, SN6000B1, Firmwarecommit has started. 2017/03/29-06:18:03, [BL-1000], 59, CHASSIS, INFO, SN6000B1, Initializing ports... 2017/03/29-06:18:03, [BL-1001], 60, CHASSIS, INFO, SN6000B1, Port initialization completed

Scope

This issue affects the following switches while running FOS versions 7.4.0, 7.4.0a or 7.4.0b. These switches will be impacted if upgraded directly to FOS 8.0.x. HPE StoreFabric SN3000B 16Gb FC SAN Switch HPE StoreFabric SN6000B 16Gb FC SAN Switch HPE StoreFabric SN6500B 16Gb FC SAN Switch HPE StoreFabric SN4000B SAN Extension Switch Brocade 16Gb SAN Switch for HPE BladeSystem c-Class NOTE: The HPE SN8000B SAN Director Switch and Brocade 16Gb FC Switch for HPE Synergy are not impacted. NOTE: Downgrades from FOS 8.0.x to FOS 7.4.0x are not impacted by this issue.

Resolution

In order to ensure a non-disruptive firmware migration, do not upgrade any of the following HPE B-series switches running FOS versions 7.4.0, 7.4.0a or 7.4.0b directly to any version of FOS 8.0.x: HPE StoreFabric SN3000B 16Gb FC SAN Switch HPE StoreFabric SN6000B 16Gb FC SAN Switch HPE StoreFabric SN6500B 16Gb FC SAN Switch HPE StoreFabric SN4000B SAN Extension Switch Brocade 16Gb SAN Switch for HPE BladeSystem c-Class Instead, upgrade to FOS version 7.4.1 or later, which contains a fix for defect000563559, and then upgrade to the desired version of FOS 8.0.x.
