Document Version Release Date Details 2 March 22, 2024 The Resolution was updated with the firmware components that resolve this issue. 1 February 23, 2018 Original Document Release. On any HPE ProLiant Gen10 server configured with any of network adapters listed in the Scope section below, when the HPE Integrated Lights Out (iLO) IP address of the HPE ProLiant Gen10 server is added to the Smart Update Manager (SUM) during inventory, the network adapters always display to update the firmware even if the network adapters have the latest firmware. In the HPE Integrated Lights Out (iLO) and ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU), the network adapter firmware versions are displayed as zz.yy.xx.xx, whereas at the Operating System level, they are displayed as zz.yy.xxxx when queried using tools like “mstflint.” When SUM is configured to perform the firmware inventory using the HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) interface, it displays the current firmware version of the Mellanox network adapter as zz.yy.xx.xx, which will always be a lower version compared to the version reported by the mstflint tool used in the firmware smart component (zz.yy.xxxx). As a result, Smart Update Manager (SUM) always selects the firmware smart component for deployment even if the firmware version is already at the same level. For example: HPE InfiniBand EDR/Ethernet 100Gb 2-port 840QSFP28 Adapter displays the firmware version as 12.21.10.00 in iLO and RBSU: However, the network adapter firmware version is displayed in the correct format at the Operating System level. Following the example: Run the command “ibstat” in the Operating System console to display the firmware version. iLO Rest displays firmware version as 12.21.10.10. When the iLO interface for firmware smart component deployment is used, Smart Update Manager (SUM) compares 12.21.1000 (detected by component self-discovery tool) against 12.21.10.00 (firmware version reported by iLO). Even though the firmware is already up-to-date, Smart Update Manager (SUM) concludes that the smart component has a higher firmware version number and always selects it for deployment. The version string reported in iLO/RBSU is returned by the device UEFI driver which is part of the network adapter firmware. This issue is caused by the Mellanox UEFI code returning the firmware version in incorrect format “zz.yy.xx.xx.”

Resolution

This issue is affected by HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers configured with the network adapters listed in the Scope section under certain circumstances as explained in the Description section. The firmware smart components are part of SPP version SPP2019031.2019_0425.6 and are provided below for download.
