Info

Document Version Release Date Details 2 07/18/2018 The note in the Resolution section regarding the controller not powering up was moved under step #3 in Option 1. 1 06/08/2018 Original Document Release. When a controller in an HPE StoreVirtual 3200 Storage system is reseated or power cycled without first performing a proper shutdown, the StoreVirtual OS file system may get into an inconsistent state, which may require a controller replacement. Follow the shutdown and restart procedure listed below when a controller must be restarted.

Scope

This issue affects HPE StoreVirtual 3200 storage system running StoreVirtual OS versions 13.5 and 13.6. The HPE StoreVirtual OS is also affected by this issue.

Resolution

Safely powering down or rebooting a storage controller includes failing over the controller before shutting down, and failing back when the controller comes back online. StoreVirtual 3200 Storage Controller - Rear View A: UID LED B: Recessed recover/power button Use the following procedure to safely power down or restart a StoreVirtual 3200 Storage system controller. Option 1 Fail over the storage controller: On the StoreVirtual menu, select Storage Systems . On the navigation pane, select the storage system that needs to be shut down or rebooted, and then select Actions > Fail over storage controller on the content pane. Select the Peer storage controller from the list. NOTE: The option to shut down a controller through the StoreVirtual Management Console (SVMC) on StoreVirtual OS version 13.5 does not currently perform a proper shutdown. This option has been disabled in StoreVirtual OS 13.6. Select the storage controller from the list if more than one is listed. Select the check box next to the storage controller status, and then click Yes, fail over storage controller . Power down the storage controller using an unfolded paper clip, or other small pointed device, to press the recessed power/recovery button for one second. The controller locate UID light should begin blinking as the shutdown process begins. When the shutdown completes, in approximately 60 to 120 seconds, all controller LEDs turn off. Replace or reseat the controller as necessary. In the case where step 3 was not necessary, restart the storage controller using an unfolded paper clip, or other small pointed device, to press and release the power/recovery button. Fail back the storage controller once it has completed power-on: On the StoreVirtual menu, select Storage Systems . On the navigation pane, select the storage system, and then select Actions > Fail back storage controller on the content pane. Select the storage controller to fail back, and then click OK. IMPORTANT: Use this method sparingly, as it may take down the only working controller. If the controller does not power up after reseating or replacement, contact support for assistance. https://www.hpe.com/us/en/contact-hpe.html IMPORTANT: Pulling both power cords removes power abruptly and may cause loss of data. HPE recommends consulting support before pulling the power cords. https://www.hpe.com/us/en/contact-hpe.html NOTE: Products sold prior to the November 1, 2015 separation of Hewlett-Packard Company into Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company and HP Inc. may have older product names and model numbers that differ from current models.
