Info

Document Version Release Date Details 5 09/16/2019 Updated information in the Resolution section 4 08/15/2019 Updated Resolution section with permanent fix, SA firmware 6.88 (or later). 3 02/27/2019 Updated Resolution section 2 09/13/2018 Updated to include Smart Array P441 as an affected controller. 1 08/08/2018 Original document release On an HPE ProLiant server configured with a Smart Array (SA) P440, Smart Array P441, Smart Array P840, or Smart Array P841 Controller, running firmware 4.52 (or earlier) and with write cache enabled or SmartCache enabled using 4 GB cache modules, the cache may be disabled. A "Caching is disabled" (1797 POST Error) and/or "Data in Write-Back SmartCache has been lost" (1831 POST Error) may be displayed after the Smart Array firmware is upgraded from version 4.52 (or earlier) to version 4.60 (or later) and a reboot is performed. This issue was seen when an offline upgrade was performed using Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) 2016.10 (or later) but this is not limited to the offline upgrade only. When this occurs, some or all of the POST errors below may be seen, and may also be logged to the Integrated Management Log (IML): 1793-Slot 1 Drive Array - Data in Write-Back Cache has been Lost. Action: Verify the integrity of the data on the drive. Backup and restore data if necessary. Perform orderly shutdowns to avoid leaving data in the cache. 1726-Slot 1 Drive Array - Cache Memory Size or Battery Presence has Changed - Cache Module configuration has automatically been updated. Action: recommends verifying the default cache read/write allocation ratio via HPSSA and setting to your application needs. 1797-Slot 1 Drive Array - Write-Back Cache Restore Previously Failed. Caching is disabled. Action: Replace the Cache Module 1831-Slot 1 Drive Array - Data in Write-Back SmartCache has been lost. Action: Restore data from backup. SOB (Serial Output Buffer log) also called Slot.x report: ALERT: FBWC - The restore operation started but was aborted. ALERT: FBWC - restore_status = 0xFF [Restore failure unknown hardware error] On later reboots, only one or both of the following errors may be seen: 1797-Slot 1 Drive Array - Write-Back Cache Restore Previously Failed. Caching is disabled. Action: Replace the Cache Module 1831-Slot 1 Drive Array - Data in Write-Back SmartCache has been lost. Action: Restore data from backup.

Scope

The cache module may become permanently disabled on any HPE ProLiant server configured with a Smart Array P440, Smart Array P441, Smart Array P840, or Smart Array P841 Controller with a 4GB cache module if the Smart Array Firmware is upgraded to a version earlier than 6.88.

Resolution

HPE strongly recommends upgrading to Smart Array Controller Firmware to Version 6.88 (or later) to prevent above errors when upgrading from 4.52 (or Earlier) on P440, P441, P840, or P841 with 4GB cache size installed. Once upgraded to version 6.88 or later do not downgrade. If this is downgraded after the upgrade, the system may display the POST error messages listed above. If any of the above error codes (1793, 1797 or 1831) has already occurred, upgrade the firmware and then restore the data from a backup.
