On an HPE ProLiant Gen9, HPE Synergy Gen9, or HPE Apollo Gen9 server running System ROM version 2.70 or 2.72, the server may experience one or both of the Uncorrectable Machine Check Exception (UMCE) errors logged in the Integrated Management Log (IML) as follows: Uncorrectable Machine Check Exception (Board 0, Processor 1, APIC ID 0x0000000E, Bank 0x00000004, Status 0xBE000000'00800400, Address 0x00007FDE'6C88D640, Misc 0x00007FDE'6C88D640) Uncorrectable Machine Check Exception (Board 0, Processor 1, APIC ID 0x0000000E, Bank 0x00000003, Status 0xBE000000'00800400, Address 0x00007FDE'6C88D640, Misc 0x00007FDE'6C88D640) The parameters that distinguish this particular failure in the above IML entries are as follows: The Bank number is either 0x00000003 or 0x00000004. The Status field has a value of 0xBE000000'00800400. This issue is not specific to HPE servers, and it is caused by an Intel microcode patch that is included in System ROM 2.70 and 2.72.

Scope

Any HPE ProLiant Gen9, HPE Synergy Gen9, or HPE Apollo Gen9 server running System ROM version 2.70 or version 2.72. For specific hardware models, see the Hardware Platforms Affected below.

Resolution

Update the System ROM to version 2.74. To obtain the System ROM, follow the next steps: Click the following link: https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/home Enter a product name (e.g., "DL380 Gen9") in the text search field and wait for a list of products to populate. From the products displayed, identify the desired product and click on the Drivers & software icon to the right of the product. From the Drivers & software dropdown menus on the left side of the page: Select the Software Type - BIOS (Entitlement Required) Select the Software Subtype - System ROM Select System ROM version 2.74 (or later). Note: To ensure the latest version will be downloaded, click on the Revision History tab to check if a new version of the firmware/driver is available. Click Download Note: There are multiple causes for this specific error, and if updating the System ROM to version 2.74 (or later) does not resolve the problem, log a case with HPE support. Contact your local country HPE Customer Support or log a case via the HPE Support Center.
