Listed the following platforms as NOT AFFECTED : HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage, D8000 Disk Enclosure, Nimble Storage, Primera Storage, StoreOnce Systems, XP Storage, HPE StoreEasy 5000 Storage and SimpliVity. 1 11/22/2019 Original Document Release. IMPORTANT : This HPD8 firmware is considered a critical fix and is required to address the issue detailed below. HPE strongly recommends immediate application of this critical fix. Neglecting to update to SSD Firmware Version HPD8 will result in drive failure and data loss at 32,768 hours of operation and require restoration of data from backup in non-fault tolerance, such as RAID 0 and in fault tolerance RAID mode if more drives fail than what is supported by the fault tolerance RAID mode logical drive. By disregarding this notification and not performing the recommended resolution, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future related errors. HPE was notified by a Solid State Drive (SSD) manufacturer of a firmware defect affecting certain SAS SSD models (reference the table below) used in a number of HPE server and storage products (i.e., HPE ProLiant, Synergy, Apollo, Synergy D3940 Storage Module, HPE ConvergedSystem, D3000/D6000/D6020 Disk Enclosures, MSA Storage, StoreEasy 1000 Storage, StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid Storage and StoreVirtual 3000 Storage are affected). NOTE : The following platforms are NOT AFFECTED by this issue: HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage, D8000 Disk Enclosure, Nimble Storage, Primera Storage, StoreOnce Systems, XP Storage, HPE StoreEasy 5000 Storage, SimpliVity, Cloudline, Moonshot and Edgeline. The issue affects SSDs with an HPE firmware version prior to HPD8 that results in SSD failure at 32,768 hours of operation (i.e., 3 years, 270 days 8 hours). After the SSD failure occurs, neither the SSD nor the data can be recovered. In addition, SSDs which were put into service at the same time will likely fail nearly simultaneously. To determine total Power-on Hours via Smart Storage Administrator, refer to the link below: Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) - Quick Guide to Determine SSD Uptime In addition, scripts which perform an SSD drive firmware check for the 32,768 power-on-hours failure issue on certain HPE SAS SSD drives are available for Linux, VMware and Windows. See the Readme.txt file contained within the zip file for instructions. Download the script at the following link: SSD Issue Detection Scripts Checksum the zip file to ensure it matches the following SHA-256 checksum: A62B30D4B2A3FA398684499BD1CD05028FD6405DB0649A3667CA15148B44382E Note that InfoSight for Servers is currently equipped with the capability to push a warning message (called a Wellness alert) to impacted customers with pointers to this bulletin and firmware downloads. Important For HPE ConvergedSystems for SAP HANA (CS500 and CS900) and HPE Predefined Configurations with HPE COE Service for SAP HANA, refer to the following bulletin: Critical Firmware Upgrade Required to Prevent Drive Failure at 32,768 Hours of Operation on Certain SAS Solid State Drive Models Deployed on HPE Solutions for SAP HANA For MSA Storage and StoreVirtual Storage platforms, refer to the following bulletins: Critical Firmware Upgrade Required For Certain MSA SAS Solid State Drive Models to Prevent Drive Failure at 32,768 Hours of Operation Critical Firmware Upgrade Required For Certain StoreVirtual 3200 and StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid SAS Solid State Drive Models to Prevent Drive Failure at 32,768 Hours of Operation For more details, please refer to the drive firmware Release Notes for the version with this fix listed in the Resolution section.

Scope

Any of the following HPE SAS SSD models running a drive firmware version prior to HPD8: Important : For SSDs with a firmware fix date of December 9, 2019, note that due to the nature of the SSD failure not occurring until attaining 32,768 hours of operation, these drives are NOT susceptible to failure during this extended period of time. IMPORTANT NOTE: The list of impacted SSD models identified in this documentation is comprehensive. No other drive models are affected. In addition, drives contained within SAN-attached or other external storage sources must be checked separately from the drives in the main system. Resolution

Immediately upgrade the drive firmware to version HPD8, which HPE has released to prevent the issue described above. NOTE : HPE recommends performing an online firmware update on HPE Gen9 and HPE Gen10 servers during minimal I/O activity. This will not require a reboot in most circumstances. However, in instances where the online firmware update does not complete successfully, an offline update is required. After the flash update completes, the Smart Component will provide a message regarding whether the flash completed successfully. IMPORTANT : A reboot is required when updating HPE Gen8 servers. In addition, online firmware flashing of drives attached to a HPE Smart Array controller running in Zero Memory (ZM) mode or Host Bus Adapter (HBA) is NOT supported. Only offline firmware flashing of drives is supported for these configurations. For some environments, there may be a rare mixture of generation hardware with the P431 Smart Array Controller (Gen8) and Gen9 processors (e.g., HPE Base Configurations for SAP HANA). As a result, a reboot is required after updating the SSD Firmware. There are several and unique Smart Components, all firmware versions HPD8. Download and install the Smart Component(s) applicable to the drive model number(s) present in the configuration.
