On any HPE server running VMware ESXi 6.5, VMware ESXi 6.7 or VMware ESXi 7.0, and configured with any of the Pensando Distributed Service Cards (DSC) listed in the Scope section below; the Online firmware update is not supported by any of the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) versions that contain the Pensando firmware and software bundle.
Scope
Any HPE server running VMware ESXi 6.5, VMware ESXi 6.7 or VMware ESXi 7.0, and configured with any of the following Pensando Distributed Service Cards (DSC): Pensando Distributed Services Platform DSC-100 100Gb 2-port QSFP28 Card (P37690-B21) Pensando Distributed Services Platform DSC-25 Enterprise 10/25Gb 2-port SFP28 Card (P26966-B21)
Resolution
To resolve this issue, perform either of the following two workarounds: Workaround 1: For platforms running VMware ESXi 6.5/6.7/70, perform a firmware update using the offline method with a Custom SPP that includes the Pensando firmware and software bundle. For more information, refer to "Initiating offline deployment" at the following URL: SPP Custom Download SPP will have the Pensando bundle under "Supplements" section as the following example: For addtional information, refer to the following URL: HPE Service Pack for ProLiant - Downloading and Installing an SPP OR Workaround 2: For platforms running ESXi 7.0, perform an installation of the individual firmware component using the CPxxxxxx_VMw.zip file (this file is included in the "CPxxxxxx.zip" which can be downloaded from Hewlett Packard Enterprise Support Center ). For the installation process, perform the following steps: Copy the Smart Component (CPxxxxxx.zip) to a location with plenty of free space on the VMware ESXi host, for example "/vmfs/volumes/datastore1". Navigate to the location where the CPxxxxxx.zip file was copied in step 1. Unzip the CPxxxxxx.zip file. Install the VMware component using the following command: esxcli software component apply -d <fully_qualified_path>/CPxxxxxx_VMw.zip For example: "esxcli software component apply -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/CPxxxxxx_VMw.zip") Navigate to the location where the component is installed. For exmaple: "cd /opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx" Perform the installation using the command: ./Execute_Component Clean up the Smart Component using the following command: esxcli software component remove -n Smart-Component-CPxxxxxx rm -rf /opt/Smart_Component/CPxxxxxx Reboot the VMware ESXi Operating System. Note: "Workaround 2" can be only performed on platforms running VMware ESXi 7.0 because VMware ESXi 7.0 is capable to support the Pensando individual firmware component.
