Info

Document Version Release Date Details 2 October 20, 2021 Updated scope. 1 September 29, 2021 Original document release On an HPE Gen10 Plus system configured with an AMD EPYC 7003 Series processors, after enabling AMD Secure Memory Encryption under the conditions below, a Pensando Distributed Services Platform card may report "Uncorrectable PCI Express errors" in the Integrated Management Log (IML) when the Linux driver is attempting to initialize. Linux will also report a Non-Maskable Interrupt (NMI) in dmesg. When this occurs, the network connectivity over the data port on the card will be unavailable. This occurs under the following conditions: Enable AMD Secure Memory Encryption in BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) System Configuration->RBSU->Memory Options->Memory Encryption Options; default disabled Disable AMD I/O Virtualization Technology in BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) System Configuration->RBSU->Virtualization options In Linux, add "mem_encrypt=on" to the kernel boot parameters

Scope

Any HPE Gen10 Plus system configured with an AMD EPYC 7003 Series processor and any Pensando Distributed Services Platform card.

Resolution

As a workaround, perform either of the following: To enable memory encryption, AMD recommends using the "Transparent Secure Memory Encryption" instead of "AMD Secure Memory Encryption." OR AMD I/O Virtualization can be enabled while Secure Memory Encryption (SME) is enabled. In this case, the kernel will disable IOMMU passthrough mode. On reboot after either of the above changes, the driver will load successfully and network connectivity will be restored.
