Description:

Info

Frequent monitoring of switches through CLI scripting can lead to excessive use of the compact flash. Continued operation of scripting that causes frequent writes to the CLI history log can cause the compact flash to fail. The switch will become unusable if the compact flash fails. Scripting programs that log into a switch and issue commands, or multiple commands, to every port on a switch creates writes to the compact flash. Even if the monitoring CLI commands are "show" commands, a CLI history log will be captured and stored on the compact flash to track the activity. Frequent polling of multiple ports will create one CLI history log for every "show" command issued at the frequency of the polling script. This may cause the switch to hang and fault. At the next reboot, the switch may fail to come back online, including failure to come online after a firmware upgrade or other operation that requires use of the compact flash, and may include loss of console access.

Scope

All supported HPE B-series switches are affected by this issue.

Resolution

Review and implement the following "best practice" recommendations as required: Utilize "-all" option on "show" commands versus issuing a separate "show" command for every port on a switch. Reduce polling frequency when possible to reduce overall number of writes to the compact flash. Utilize the REST or SNMP interface to conduct regular polling. "Show" / "GET" commands issued from REST and SNMP are not captured in the CLI history log, and will not contribute to any extra compact flash writes. There will still be a single audit-log to record the successful log in from REST or SNMP; however, there will be only a single write regardless of how many "Show" or "GET" operations are performed.
