After performing a new fresh installation of VMware ESXi 7.0 U2 or VMware ESXi 7.0 U3 using the Virtual Media URL option of HPE iLO 5 GUI, the virtual NIC interface is not enabled in the VMware ESXi OS even though the virtual NIC interface is marked as enabled on the iLO GUI display. NOTE : VMware ESXi 7.0 image is the HPE Custom image version of VMware ESXi 7.0.U2/U3. When using the command esxcli network nic list to list the network adapters in the system, the virtual NIC (vsub0) will not be displayed in the results of the command. The following example shows the Operating System does not detect and display the virtual NIC. (Notice that the "vusb0" is not displayed in the list of network adapters on the system.)

Scope

Either of the following HPE Synergy Compute Modules running VMware ESXi 7.0 U2 / 7.0 U3: HPE Synergy 480 Gen10 Compute Module HPE Synergy 660 Gen10 Compute Module

Resolution

This issue is resolved in HPE Integrated Lights-Out 5 firmware Version 2.72 (or later) on the Gen10 server. Download Gen10 Service Pack for ProLiant Version 2023.09.00.00 (or later) HPE Synergy Service Pack Version SY-2024.01.02 (or later) Workaround Perform either of the following: Workaround 1: Install the Operating Systems image thru the "local *.iso file" option of the CD/DVD OR Workaround 2: After the installation of the Operating System via the Virtual Media URL option of the CD/DVD, perform the following steps: Reset iLO via the Reset iLO button on the Diagnostics page of the iLO GUI. After the iLO has been reset, verify that the "vusb0" NIC is now available by checking the NIC list again: The "vusb0" is now in the list of network adapters. To fully enable the virtual NIC interface on the server, disable the virtual NIC interface using the following vnic enablement command: /etc/init.d/vnicen.sh stop Enable the virtual NIC interface using the following vnic enablement command: /etc/init.d/vnicen.sh start 3. Verify if the interface is up and functioning by performing a ping on the IP address 16.1.15.1. NOTE : The script, /etc/init.d/vnicen.sh is provided with the HPE Custom image version of VMware ESXi 7.0.
