Advisory: HPE SSD - Solid State Drives May Report "Wear Gauge Log Is Full" and the Wear Information Will Be Incorrect in the Array Diagnostics

Last update date:

2/9/2024

Affected products:

HPE Server Solid State Drives

Affected releases:

No affected releases provided.

Fixed releases:

No fixed releases provided.

Description:

Info

HPE solid state drives for SAS, SATA or NVMe may report the message, "Wear Gauge log is full." The array diagnostics will show wearout information and "Power on Hours," for example: [ Top ] > [ Smart Array P420i in Embedded Slot ] > [ Internal Drive Cage at Port 1I : Box 2 ] > [ Physical Drive (400 GB Solid State SATA) 1I:2:1 ] > SmartSSD Wear Gauge Status OK Supported TRUE Log Full TRUE Utilization 0.010000 Remaining Days Until Wearout 52078 Power On Hours 125 Has Smart Trip SSD Wearout FALSE Has 56 Day Warning FALSE Has Utilization Warning NONE The installed HPE firmware for the SSDs will include internal drive logs required by HPE developers, in addition to other industry standard and vendor-default logs. Some of these logs have a finite amount of available space and do not roll over. This results in the logs becoming full with the drive being unable to add more data to the affected log(s). When this occurs, the drive will generate a message that the log is full. This issue should only occur on drives that have been operating well beyond three years of time or more than 26,280 Power on Hours (PoH). All drives reporting the wear logs that are full should show more than seven years PoH.

Scope

Any SAS, SATA or NVMe solid state drive with HPE firmware may be affected.

Resolution

The warning message and inaccurate data in the HPE diagnostics tools indicate that an HPE specific log is full. The Solid State Drives (SSD) will continue to operate normally. The power-on hours for affected drives can correctly report data using other, non-HPE, tools that can pull SMART drive statistics. The drive statistics, health status, wear details, etc. are still available via non-HPE specific drive logs and accessible by using the embedded Operating System (OS) tools and third-party tools that are able to pull the data from the industry standard logs. Only drives well past three years of operational time (equivalent to 26,280 power-on hours) will report a log-full message. Otherwise, the drives will continue to operate normally and should not , and do not need to be replaced for this issue.
