Document Version Release Date Details 2 September 20, 2022 A new fix has been added to the Resolution section. 1 July 11, 2022 Original Document Release. On any HPE ProLiant Gen10 server configured with an HPE Smart Array P824i-p MR Gen10 (24 Internal Lanes/4GB Cache/CacheCade) 12G SAS PCIe Controller (with no SAS Expander) with large capacity Large Form Factor (LFF) SATA or/and SAS drives; random drive(s) failures are reported when a cold boot is performed. When this occurs, one or more of the following errors will be displayed during Power-On Self-Test (POST). These errors will also be logged in the Integrated Management Log (IML). No issues are experienced when the system is performing a warm boot. Example of the Power-On Self-Test (POST)/Integrated Management Log (IML) logs: Slot 3 Smart Array - Configured physical drives are missing: Port 5I Box 7 Bay 2 ACTION:1. Power down the system. 2. Be sure all cables are connected. 3. Be sure all drives are fully seated. 4. Power cycle any external enclosures while the system is off. 5. Power up the server to see if the issue still exists. 6. Replace the drives. Slot 3 Smart Array - Drive(s) are failed: Port 5I Box 7 Bay 2 ACTION:1. Be sure all cables are connected properly and securely. 2. Be sure all drives are fully seated. 3. Replace the defective cables, drive, or both. Slot 3 Smart Array - The following logical drives are failed: 1. ACTION:1. Be sure all cables are connected properly and securely. 2. Be sure all drives are fully seated. 3. Replace the defective cables, drive, or both.

Scope

Any HPE ProLiant Gen10 server configured with an HPE Smart Array P824i-p MR Gen10 (24 Internal Lanes/4GB Cache/CacheCade) 12G SAS PCIe Controller (with no SAS Expander) with large capacity Large Form Factor (LFF) SATA or/and SAS drives.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, download and install the following ROM Flash component version: Online ROM Flash Component for Windows (x64) - HPE Smart Array P824i-p MR Gen10 Version 24.23.0-0048 Online ROM Flash Component for ESXi (x86) - HPE Smart Array P824i-p MR Gen10 Version 24.23.0-0048 Online ROM Flash Component for Linux (x64) - HPE Smart Array P824i-p MR Gen10 Version 24.23.0-0048 Workaround As an alternative option to resolve this issue on systems running ROM Flash component version 24.23.0-0043(B) (or prior), execute the following command using StorCLI: storcli64 /cx set spinupdrivecount=4 Notes: In the command above, cx is controller ID. When the Smart Array controller is replaced, this command needs to be executed again to prevent the issue.
