The Cohesity software uses erasure coding to ensure data redundancy. By design, the drives are left unconfigured or are configured as single physical drive RAID 0 logical drives in the Smart Array controller configuration so that they are presented individually to the Cohesity software. When redundant hardware RAID is not used to manage drives, processes such as background surface scans, disk error handling, and latency management should be handled by the operating system, filesystem, or software stack. The Cohesity software monitors drives for errors, such as UREs or media errors that may not yet have resulted in a drive failure. The software marks the drives as offline when pre-determined thresholds are reached. When a drive is marked offline, Cohesity encourages the customer to work with the hardware vendor to replace the drive. In some cases, the AHS log may not yet show the drive as failed.
