Description:

Info

Document Version Release Date Details 2 January 26, 2024 Added information to Resolution about Comvault CPR2024 release. 1 March 3, 2023 Original Document Release. The Commvault Hyperscale software uses erasure coding to ensure data redundancy. By design, the drives are left unconfigured in the HPE MegaRAID Controller or Smart Array controller configuration so that they are presented individually to the Commvault software. The Commvault Hyperscale software monitors drives for errors and displays them in its command center. In some cases, the AHS log, iLO, IML, and LEDs may not show the drives as failed. When the HPE logs and the hardware do not indicate a drive as failed, HPE requires the information detailed in the resolution below to confirm which drive caused the Commvault alert. When redundant hardware RAID is not used to manage drives in a Commvault Hyperscale Cluster, disk error handling and latency management are handled by the operating system, file system, or software stack.

Resolution

In their CPR2024 release Commvault has improved drive error handling. To take advantage of these improvements, contact Commvault to discuss installing update CPR2024 (or later). Additional details may be found on commvault.com on the Announcements page. When Commvault recommends a drive replacement, the following information is needed: Commvault Case Number, if applicable Description: A short description of the issue and request Detail: Spare part number Drive location port, box, slot Drive serial number Drive model Reason for the replacement request Exact error message(s) Disk size Drive form factor Drive interface Logs: AHS, OS, SmartCTL or similar SMART dump, and screen shots of errors If this information is not provided initially, HPE support may need to gather this information when the call is logged. Much of the detailed information can be obtained with the following Linux command: lshw -class disk The AHS log can be downloaded using the process in the following document: HPE ProLiant Servers - How to Generate the Active Health System (AHS) Log SmartCTL data can be collected using the following command: smartctl -a /dev/sdf (where sdf is replaced with the disk to be checked.) SmartCTL is installed with smartmontools, so it may not be available on all systems. The detailed data, AHS log, SmartCTL data, OS logs, and screenshots are used by HPE Services to confirm the drive needs to be replaced.
