Document Version Release Date Details 4 July 31, 2023 Updated the Resolution with the Patch Bundle for Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2022.09.01.04. 3 June 14, 2023 Updated the Resolution with Gen10 Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2023.03.00.00 link. 2 May 30, 2023 Updated the Resolution with links to the steps on how to disable MCTP. 1 May 24, 2023 Original Document Release. A user can attempt to update the firmware from version 1.0.14.1052 (or earlier) to firmware version 1.0.14.1060 (or later) using Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) 2022 (March/September). However, the expected firmware version will not install, and only firmware version 1.0.14.1055 will be installed. This issue has been reported for the HPE Gen10 Plus NS204i-p card but also may occur on HPE Gen10 Plus NS204i-d, NS204i-t, or NS204i-r boot devices. If the issue occurs, the user will not see an error message when the firmware fails to install. Instead, the following symptoms can be seen after the firmware update: Firmware version 1.0.14.1055 will install, instead of the expected firmware version. Unable to update to a later firmware version (e.g., 1.0.14.1060) from firmware version 1.0.14.1055 using a firmware package. System will take a very long time to complete POST or a boot. System will not boot into the Operating System (OS). The information, "Physical Device Information," "Virtual Device Information" or "Controller information" in F9 (System Utilities->System Configuration->HPE NS204i…) will not be displayed on the user interface. iLO will display "Unknown" status and the installed firmware version 1.0.14.1055 in "Device Inventory," for example: This issue occurs because Management Component Transport Protocol (MCTP) on the NS204i device is not responsive or does not function properly. NOTE : Users who are already running the firmware version 1.0.14.1063, before the firmware update, will not see this issue.

Scope

After a firmware update via HPE Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) 2022 (March/September), the symptoms above in the Description section can occur with any of the HPE Gen10 Plus NS204i devices.

Resolution

This issue is resolved for HPE NS204i-p, NS204i-d, NS204i-t, NS204i-r Boot Devices with firmware version 1.0.14.1063 via Gen10 Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2023.03.00.00 or Patch Bundle for Gen10/Gen10 Plus SPP 2022.09.01.04 (dated July 28, 2023). To prevent this issue from occurring, update to firmware version 1.0.14.1063 or later. For firmware updates, do not use the firmware versions from SPP 2022 (March), use Gen10 Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2023.03.00.00. If this issue is already occurring, perform the following steps: Disable Management Component Transport Protocol (MCTP) in HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) or ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) for NS204i device. Note : For instructions on how to disable MCTP for iLO or UEFI/RBSU, use one of the following guides: "Configuring PCIe MCTP options" in the "UEFI System Utilities User Guide for HPE ProLiant Gen10, ProLiant Gen10 Plus Servers, and HPE Synergy" OR "Configuring MCTP discovery" in the "HPE iLO 5 User Guide" Use the SPP 2023.03.00.00 (or later) for updates. Re-enable MCTP in iLO or RBSU for NS204i.
