Document Version Release Date Details 2 February 13, 2024 Replaced content throughout the document for HPE Broadcom Fibre Channel Adapter Firmware from 14.0.499.25 to 14.0.499.29. 1 July 17, 2023 Original Document Release. HPE SN1610E 32Gb Fibre Channel (FC) Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) in HPE ProLiant Gen11 and HPE Alletra Gen11 Storage Servers require a minimum firmware version of 14.0.499.29 IMPORTANT : Firmware versions earlier than version 14.0.499.29 are unsupported and untested with HPE ProLiant Gen11 and HPE Alletra Gen11 Storage servers and can result in an undetermined operation of the server. These may include, (but are not limited to) symptoms such as: The adapter may not be recognized in the UEFI/RBSU utility. The host server is unable to boot from SAN-connected storage. The SAN storage LUN unexpectedly disconnects, resulting in system unresponsiveness at the OS level, due to a firmware driver mismatch. HPE SN1610E Fibre Channel HBAs with firmware version 12.8.528.21 (or earlier) will not update when a firmware upgrade is performed using the Platform Level Data Model (PLDM) firmware package method with the HPE Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP). The firmware flash process goes into an exception state with error messages logged (Figure 1). The attempted PLDM firmware update fails with the following error message: iLO failed to update the P14.0.499.29 header.pldm.fwpkg firmware Message Id: iLO.2.0.UpdateFailed Figure 1: Failure message during PLDM upgrade

Scope

This advisory applies to HPE ProLiant Gen11 or HPE Alletra Gen11 Storage servers configured with any of the following HPE Fibre Channel HBAs: HPE SN1610E 32Gb 2-port Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter HPE SN1610E 32Gb 1-port Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter HPE Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) and Smart Update Manager (SUM) versions affected: Gen11 SPP 2022.12.00 (or later) SUM 10.0.0 (or later)

Resolution

IMPORTANT : If a situation occurs where the HPE ProLiant FC HBA is in an error state after a failed firmware procedure, a service call to HPE Support is required to replace the adapter. After replacement, updating the firmware on the new adapter is required while following the procedure below. Follow the steps below for the process in updating the firmware using the iLO: NOTE : The firmware update procedure for the adapter may require multiple firmware steps, depending on the firmware version of the adapter. If the adapter has firmware earlier than 12.8.528.21, first update the adapter firmware to version 12.8.528.21 by uploading the appropriate Windows Smart Component (cp049957.exe) (HPE Firmware Flash for Emulex Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters for Microsoft Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 x64) - available on the HPE Support Center website, to the iLO Repository. This action will queue the installation/ firmware update task on the following system reboot. If the adapter is at version 12.8.528.21, it must now be step-updated to firmware version 14.0.499.25 using the Windows Smart Component (cp050063.exe) (available on the HPE Support Center website) uploaded to the iLO repository. This process is similar to the process in step 1). Reboot the server and then verify in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) "System Configuration" menu (press F9 during restart) that the adapter is now at version 14.0.499.25. Once the adapter is updated to version 14.0.499.25, it can now be step- updated to the latest firmware version, currently 14.2.589.19, using the Windows Smart Component (cp058088.exe) available on the HPE Support Center website) uploaded to iLO repository. This process is like the process in step 1). Reboot the server and then verify in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) "System Configuration" menu (press F9 during restart) that the adapter is now at version 14.2.589.19. NOTE : Once the adapter is at version 14.0.499.25, it is now compatible with the PLDM firmware update process and you can proceed to update the firmware to the latest version (currently 14.2.589.19, which is available on the HPE Support Center website). This update can be performed via the use of the SPP package or the online OS Smart Component. The steps below detail the use of the iLO firmware repository to update the firmware of the adapter: Log into the server iLO webpage using an account with administrative privileges, and navigate to the System Information panel and then to the Device Inventory tab to verify the current firmware on the HPE SN1610E FC HBA: Figure 2 : Device Inventory from iLO page showing earlier (version 12.x) firmware In the Firmware and OS Software panel on the iLO page, click Upload to iLO Repository on the right side: Figure 3 : iLO firmware upload page Upload the Windows OS-based Smart Component (e.g. cp058088.exe) and the corresponding component signature file (e.g. cp058088.compsig) to the iLO Repository: Figure 4 : iLO firmware upload steps Figure 5: iLO firmware upload file selections Once the component is uploaded to the iLO Repository, it will be displayed in the contents. The firmware update must be scheduled using the Install Component action icon: Figure 6: iLO Repository listing with the Install Component selected NOTE : Ensure that the TPM override button is selected: Figure 7 : Selecting firmware image to be installed. Note important selection for TPM override Figure 8: Verification of action in the installation queue in iLO Verify that the update task has been scheduled in the Installation Queue tab: Figure 9: Verification of scheduled task in iLO Reboot the server, using the reset option from the Power action icon, to allow the system to restart and automatically complete the update process: Figure 10: Restart of server to initiate firmware update After restart, the status can be verified in the Installation Queue tab: Figure 11: Verification of installation status After restart, return to the iLO System Information panel, and then to the Device Inventory tab to verify the current firmware on the SN1610E adapter: Figure 12 : Device Inventory with updated firmware displayed RECEIVE PROACTIVE UPDATES : Receive support alerts (such as Customer Advisories), as well as updates on drivers, software, firmware, and customer replaceable components, proactively in your e-mail through HPE Support Alerts.
