Info

Document Version Release Date Details 2 September 6, 2023 Updated Resolution with an OS independent firmware package and added a recommendation to reboot the system after a firmware update. 1 August 21, 2023 Original Document Release. A limited number of HPE 800-watt Flex-slot Titanium Low Halogen power supplies (PSU), SKU:865438-B21 / PN:865436-101 / SPN:886793-001, built with firmware version 2.0, may potentially encounter an intermittent issue during some load conditions that cause the power supply to report an erroneous PSU protection fault and a generate General power supply fault message in the Integrated Management Log (IML). The server does not shut down if one PSU remains active in redundant power supply configurations. However, the general power supply fault/failure could cause a system reset, depending on the configuration and load on the system at the time of the fault. When this occurs, the following message will be written in the IML and the green LED on the PSU will not be illuminated: IML Entry: Caution,171,2219,0x000B,Power,0x0028,Hardware, Power,11/03/2022 07:57:57,90: System Power Supply: General Failure (Power Supply X) ACTION: Replace the power supply .

Scope

Any HPE Gen10, Gen10 Plus or Gen11 servers using 800W Power Supply Unit with HW Revision 20F to 23F (Rev. mark is located on the PSU sticker) and firmware v2.0 (found in iLO). These hardware revisions were shipped between July 2022 and August 2023. Note: 01F to 19F revisions with the FW 1.0 are not affected by this issue. Resolution

This is an erroneous error message condition generated by the 2.0 firmware. To resolve the issue, upgrade the power supply firmware from 2.0 to 2.01. It is not necessary to update the firmware if the current version is other than 2.0, the update will stop if the detected firmware version is 1.0 or if the power supply is already running firmware version 2.01. The Hardware Revision information can be obtained from the power supply sticker as mentioned in the Scope section, without having to power on the server. Before updating the firmware, keep the power supply units in healthy status so that the system can communicate properly. If the power supply unit is offline, try unplugging and reconnecting the power cord first. For more important information, review the Release Notes tab. In order to correctly activate the fix, a cold reboot is recommended after a firmware package update. Follow any of the methods below to cold reboot: Manually shutdown from the operating system and then power on. OR Press the 'Cold Boot' virtual button in ILO, the server shuts down and will restart after approximately 8 seconds. OR Use the ILOREST command to remove the power immediately, followed by a restart: ilorest reboot coldboot --url $ILO_ADDRESS -u $ILO_USER -p $ILO_PASSWORD OR Use the Redfish command for cold boot: curl -i --insecure -u ${ILO_USER}:${ILO_PASSWORD} -X POST -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"ResetType":"ColdBoot"}' https://$ILO_ADDRESS/redfish/v1/Systems/1/Actions/Oem/Hpe/HpeComputerSystemExt.SystemReset/ As a workaround, try reseating the power supply unit and ensure the power distribution unit (PDU) and rack chassis are properly grounded. Hardware revisions are being reworked to use firmware version 2.01, revision 24F and newer will use firmware version 2.01 as a default. Power supply units, with a hardware revision prior to 24F, that are flashed at the factory with firmware version 2.01 will have a blue ink mark as shown in the following image: RECEIVE PROACTIVE UPDATES : Receive support alerts (such as Customer Advisories), as well as updates on drivers, software, firmware, and customer replaceable components, proactively in your e-mail through HPE Support Alerts.
