On Intel-based Gen11 systems, the HPE Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) version 2023.10.00 reports a failure when attempting to update NS204i firmware to 1.2.14.1012 when NS204i is running firmware version 1.2.14.1010 (or earlier). Communication between the server and the other devices installed are dropped temporarily when the SPP updates the Management Engine (ME) firmware. Consequently, the server cannot communicate with the NS204i device. This issue occurs when: The ME firmware is updated before the NS204i firmware is updated, and the NS204i firmware is updated without rebooting the system first. When installing SPP_2023.10.00.00. This issue does not occur when: Only updating NS204i firmware. Manually updating the ME firmware, rebooting the system, and then updating NS204i firmware. Updating NS204i firmware first, and then updating the ME firmware.

Scope

HPE Gen11 systems configured with NS204i boot devices for firmware version 1.2.14.1010 (or earlier). Gen11 Boot Controller: HPE NS204i-u Gen11 NVMe Hot Plug Boot Optimized Storage Device (P48183-B21) Servers: HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 Server HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 Server HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen11 Server HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 Server HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 Server HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen11 Server HPE ProLiant DL380a Gen11 NOTE : Gen 10 and Gen 10 Plus systems are not affected by this issue.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in HPE Gen11 Boot Controller NS204i-u firmware version 1.2.14.1012 (or later) which was released in September 2023. Firmware installation can be performed using the HPE Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP). Update by launching HPE Gen11 SPP 2023.10.00.00 (or later) on any supported operating system. A system reboot can recover the communication between the server and the NS204i, thus performing a reboot after the ME firmware to prevent such an issue. As a workaround, complete either of the following steps: Reboot the system to recover the communication between the server and the NS204i firmware, thus performing a reboot after the ME firmware to prevent the issue. Then re-launch the SPP to run the NS204i firmware updater again, Or Install NS204i v1.2.14.1012 manually. NOTE : All firmware components in an HPE ProLiant server can be successfully updated manually, while the SPP contains the update tools for each of the firmware images. However, the system still requires a reboot after the ME firmware is updated to avoid other communication issues between the server and the NS204i firmware.
