Description:

Info

After Upgrading the ESXi 7.0 U3 drivers for the HPE Synergy 3530C 16Gb Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter (SKU# 777454-B21), the FC volumes are inaccessible. This occurs as follows: • If vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) is mistakenly used with wrong Vendor Addon or with the HPE Synergy Service Pack (SSP) for Firmware and Driver Addon, the FC volumes will be inaccessible. • If HPE OneView is mistakenly used to upgrade the 3530C HBA drivers, the FC volumes will be inaccessible. The "in-box" driver must be used for the 3530C 16G HBA in the SSP 2023.08.02 (August 2023) and all future SSP releases that still support the 3530C HBA.

Scope

Any HPE Synergy Compute Module running VMware ESXi 7.0 U3, and configured with an HPE Synergy 3530C 16Gb Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter (777454-B21).

Resolution

RECOVERY STEPS If your compute module has the 3530C 16G HBA and the FC volumes are inaccessible after upgrading the drivers for ESXi 7.0 U3 using vLCM or HPE OneView, the following steps will recover access to FC volumes: STEP #1 Confirm Compute Module is Gen10, HBA is 3530C, and OS is ESXi 7.0 U3 Gen10 and ESXi 7.0 U3 listed in Hardware Overview in HPE OneView 3530C HBA listed in Device Inventory in HPE OneView STEP #2 Check for missing vmhba storage adapter: (esxcli storage core adapter list, or view storage adapters in the UI) No lpfc adapter showing up on vSphere so, all datastores are disconnected. Compute Module would have been in maintenance mode when FC volumes lost – so no VMs went down. This Compute Module cannot take on any load because it cannot see storage. Step #3 Check the version of the installed lpfc driver: (esxcli software vib list | grep lpfc ) Step #4 Remove the lpfc driver (esxcli software vib remove -n lpfc ) Step #5 Download from VMware the “VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi) Offline Bundle” Any version / build will work as long as the base VMware bundle still has a known good driver. Step #6 Extract from the Offline Bundle the lpfc VIB (this is located in the zip file in the /vib20/lpfc path) and copy the file to a known location. Step #7 Transfer the file to the ESX host. (This example is using WinSCP) Step #8 Install the newly copied VIB (esxcli software vib install -v /path-to-vib) Step #9 Reboot the host. Step #10 Log back in and verify the storage adapter is present. NOTE: adapters are link-down because of an upstream cable issue in this lab NOTE: If this cluster is being managed by VMware Lifecycle Manager (vLCM), the host is no longer compliant – and can no longer be managed / remediated by vLCM (e.g. best to move this host OUT of the vLCM managed cluster).
