Description:

Info

In a Redundant Logical Enclosure, the Virtual Connect Modules form a Master-Subordinate Pair. During normal lifecycle operation, the roles can change, and any module can take up the role of a Master module. However, only the Master VC module should be queried for valid SNMP data, and the subordinate module is designed to return a value of 0 on all network statistics. However, if an snmpwalk is performed on the subordinate module, it may incorrectly return a non-zero value against MIBs meant to get network statistics. For example, the stats, particularly ifInDiscards / IfOutDiscards OIDs values, may randomly return a non-zero value. If using a third-party SNMP monitoring system to directly monitor the VCs instead of using OneView, the SNMP monitoring system may not know which module to query and may query the subordinate module. This could result in invalid alerts/traps based on this incorrect data.

Scope

In the scenario described above, either of the following modules: HPE Virtual Connect SE 100Gb F32 Module for Synergy running any firmware version. HPE Virtual Connect SE 40Gb F8 Module for Synergy running any firmware version.

Resolution

A future version of Virtual Connect firmware will fix this issue. Following this update, the subordinate module will return zero in response to SNMP calls for Statistics, as per design. This advisory will be updated when the solution becomes available. Irrespective of the fix, it is important to note that only the Master module should be queried for valid SNMP data. The Master module alone manages and collects accurate interface statistics of both the Master-Subordinate modules. Since any module can assume the role of the Master module, specific SNMP OIDs have been designed to identify the correct Master module before querying it. This process is automated by OneView and does not apply if using OneView to manage an infrastructure. If using a third-party tool to monitor the infrastructure in addition to OneView, make specific MIB calls based on the Virtual Connect module in use. Here are the calls for the different modules: HPE Virtual Connect SE 40Gb F8 Module for Synergy snmpwalk -v1 -c public <Virtual Connect module IP address> 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.5.7.5.8.1.99.1.4.0 HPE Virtual Connect SE 100Gb F32 Module for Synergy snmpwalk -v1 -c public <Virtual Connect module IP address> 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.5.7.5.9.1.99.1.4.0 The above SNMP MIB calls will return the following values: init(0), -- Indicates Virtual Connect module is transitioning between different states and we would have to query the VC module again until it reaches the states below. active(1), -- Indicates that this is the Master module to be queried. standby(2) -- Indicates that this is Sub-ordinate module and should NOT be queried for SNMP statistics.
