On any HPE Synergy Gen10, Gen10 Plus, or Gen11 Compute Modules configured with Boot from SAN for HPE Synergy 5330c 32GB Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.8 operating system fails to boot after upgrading from RHEL 8.7, and the operating system enters "Dracut." This issue is seen when the RHEL 8.7 OS has an Out-of-Box driver, "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 Update 7 Server Fibre Channel Driver Kit for HPE Emulex Host Bus Adapters,” (lpfc) version 14.2.589.5 (or later) is installed. The Serial Console log contains the following messages: Started Device-Mapper Multipath Device Controller. Timed out waiting for device dev-mapper-rhel\x2dswap.device. Scope

The upgrade from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.7 with "Out-of-Box driver Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 Update 7 Server Fibre Channel Driver Kit for HPE Emulex Host Bus Adapters” (lpfc) version 14.2.589.5 to RHEL 8.8 on a Boot from SAN LUN provisioned through HPE Synergy 5330c 32GB Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter.

Resolution

NOTE: If RHEL 8.8 fails to boot, the RHEL 8.7 operating system can be recovered by selecting it from the GRUB menu after reboot. This will bring up the RHEL 8.7 operating system, which was running prior to the RHEL 8.8 upgrade. After the Operating System upgrade from RHEL 8.7 to RHEL 8.8, install the Out-of-Box driver “Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 Update 8 Server Fibre Channel Driver Kit for HPE Synergy Emulex Host Bus Adapters" version 14.2.589.21 (or later) before rebooting the server.
