Description:

Info

HPE Gen11 AMD processor servers may not power off successfully, after a reboot from the operating system immediately followed by another external power operation on the server, such as ipmitool chassis power <function> in the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC). This has been identified as a very rare condition with time synchronization when two power function commands are issued concurrently within a short time window. In this scenario, one or all the following conditions may occur: Fans will be running at full speed. The iLO interface shows the power button as greyed out. The Server Power status shows "RESET" and is greyed out.

Scope

This issue has been confirmed on the HPE ProLiant Gen11 AMD EPYC Gen4 processor servers listed in the Hardware Platforms Affected section below. HPE and AMD are continuing to investigate as whether other HPE ProLiant Gen11 AMD servers are affected and the Hardware Platforms Affected section will be updated accordingly.

Resolution

As a workaround, to avoid this issue, when performing a warm reset / Operation System reboot / init 6 / shutdown, avoid performing any other power related function until the previous operation has completed. If this issue has already occurred, physically remove all power sources and connect back to recover the server.
