Info

Certain drives may fail earlier than expected. Overall, the pattern will vary depending on the storage solution, but when affected by this issue, the drives will report the same sense code "4:44:00": Sense Key: 04h = Hardware error ASC/ASCQ: 44h/00h = Internal target failure Note : The ASCQ may also report a different vendor specific value. If the drives recover from a power cycle, then the firmware should be upgraded as soon as possible. If drives do not recover from the power cycle, then they are not affected by this issue. There may also be timeout and reset events on the affected drives. The drive will be seen as failed by the storage solution.

Scope

The drives affected will be on firmware HPG0 for drive models, MB008000GWZVN and MB006000GWZVL: HPE 6TB SATA 6G Business Critical 7.2K LFF LP 1-year Warranty 512e Multi Vendor HDD (834028-B21) HPE 8TB SATA 6G Business Critical 7.2K LFF LP 1-year Warranty 512e Multi Vendor HDD (861742-B21)

Resolution

For a permanent solution, download and install the Universal Firmware Package for Drives - MB006000GWZVL and MB008000GWZVN firmware HPG1 . HPG1 firmware will resolve the issue. Storage solution issues, such as restoration of fault tolerance, rebuilding arrays, etc., will need to be addressed after the upgrade. Workaround If the driver has failed, power cycle the affected server to recover the drive to operation, without any lingering drive hardware issues. However, it may not continue functioning properly because the drive may fail again later.
