Info

In rare cases, certain HPE StoreEver LTO Ultrium Tape Drives and libraries may not be detected during a server cold boot (power disconnected) when attaching to an HPE Smart Array SR Controller. Other situations when this issue can be seen: Drive discovery after Windows or Linux updates. Site power failures when library and server are powering up at the same time. In this case, some of the library’s drives might not be discovered. To determine whether the HPE StoreEver LTO drives are detected by the HPE Smart Array SR controller, do the following: Windows Click on start and type Device Manager and then open it. See if the Device Manager looks like image 1. Image 1 shows that the drive is not discovered. Missing drives will not be discovered in the backup software: Image 1: Tape drive is missing Image 2 is what it looks like when drives are discovered by device manager. The backup software should be able to discover drives if they are seen by the device manager: Image 2: Tape drive is discovered Linux Use the lsscsi command to see if the drive is discovered: Image 3: Tape drive is missing Image 4: Tape drive is discovered All OS versions Below is an image of the iLO connection to the server where you can see the firmware version of the HBA. Click on System Information and then select Device Inventory : The Active Health System (AHS) report is required for support to see the firmware and driver version of the HPE Smart Array SR controller firmware. HPE Support will also be able to see if the drive is connected when looking at the serial output buffer. To collect an AHS report, click Information then Active Health System Log . Choose a date range and click Download . This log can be used by HPE Support to make sure the correct drivers and firmware are loaded.

Scope

Though the issue is rare, this issue has been observed on HPE Smart Array SR controller firmware versions 5.00, 5.32, and 5.61 more often than version 4.11 or 6.22 and later firmware versions. Resolution

The issue is in the firmware of the HPE Smart Array SR controller. The original discovery of the drive by the HPE Smart Array SR controller has not been fixed, but with version 6.22 and later the firmware has another rescan that is run just before turning off the ports. Make sure the firmware in the HPE Smart Array SR controller is at version 6.22 or later. These versions have a rescan just before the SAS port is turned off. If needed, update to the firmware and the matched driver for the HPE Smart Array SR Controller, use the HPE StoreEver Compatibility Matrix . The downloads for the firmware and the driver for the HPE Smart Array SR Controller can be found on the HPE Support Center . Search for the controller product name (for example, e208i-p). Reboot the server from the OS to recover the missing HPE StoreEver LTO Ultrium Tape Drives, especially if you have done a server OS update. If the drives are not discovered after the warm restart, then check for connectivity of the HPE StoreEver LTO Ultrium Tape Drives as stated in the description. If, after performing the previous steps, the drive or library is still not discovered, the issue may be the HPE Smart Array SR controller, the internal SAS cable, the power connection, or the HPE StoreEver LTO Ultrium Tape Drive. If this is the case, then collect an AHS report from the ILO connection to the server and open an HPE Support case to get help.
