After configuring a ProLiant server with VMware ESX 4.0 and installing the HP Management Agents for VMware ESX Version 8.5.1, excessive smifcmd messages are logged in the HP Management Agents cma.log file; however, the functionality of the server is not affected. The issue is observed in the following installation scenario: Configure the ProLiant server. Install VMware ESX 4.0 on the system. Install the HP Management Agents for VMware ESX Version 8.5.1. View the Management Agents cma.log file located at: /var/log/hp-snmp-agents folder Note that the Log is filled with the following smifcmd messages: May 10 12:32:52 localhost cmahostd [2947]: ReadRegister: SMIFCMD_I2C_TRANSACTION failed

Scope

Any ProLiant server running VMware ESX 4.0 (all updates) with HP Management Agents for VMware ESX 4.0 Version 8.5.1.

Resolution

A future release of the HP Management Agents for VMware ESX will prevent the error messages from occurring and filling the cma.log file. This advisory will be updated when more information becomes available. The Insight Management Agents log rotation feature will prevent the file size from growing too large so the messages will not fill the hard drive. No action is necessary.
