HP BladeSystem or ProLiant servers may ship with default networking configurations or may be updated with networking options that may exceed the VMware recommended "Configuration Maximum" of four 10GbE ports. Exceeding the "Configuration Maximum" and/or adjusting the NetQueues per VM to exceed the logical CPU count could exhaust the Network Heap Size and cause poor performance or various system errors. By default, the network stack allocates 64MB of buffers to handle network data. If the network load requires more than 64MB of memory to hold the in-transit network data due to high volumes of network traffic on four or more 10GbE NICs, network drivers may be unable to allocate memory for posting receive buffers. Any server configured with four (or more) 10GbE NICs could exceeded the recommended "Maximum Configuration. The following documents from VMware address this: The VMware vSphere 4.0 and vSphere 4.0 Update 1 Configuration Maximum: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_config_max.pdf The VMware vSphere 4.1 Configuration Maximum: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_config_max.pdf VMware Knowledge Base (KB) Article 1020808 Recommended configuration maximum for NIC ports on ESX./ESXi 4.1, 4.0 and 4.0U1 : http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1020808
Any ProLiant server running VMware ESX 4.0, 4.0U1 or 4.1 and any HP 10GbE NIC.
A future VMware ESX/ESXi operating system update may support a greater number of 10GbE ports. To adhere to the VMware recommended Configuration Maximum, press F9 to enter the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) at Power-On Self-Test (POST) to disable PCI networking devices that exceed the fourth port.
