On an HP ProLiant server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, the following message is displayed during the initial startup screen of Red Hat Linux: [Firmware Bug]: the BIOS has corrupted hw-PMU resources Additionally, a message similar to the following is posted to the dmesg file: CPU0: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X7560 @ 2.27GHz stepping 06 Performance Events: PEBS fmt1+, Nehalem events, Broken BIOS detected, complain to your hardware vendor. [Firmware Bug]: the BIOS has corrupted hw-PMU resources (MSR 38d is 330) Intel PMU driver. OR CPU0: Quad-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2389 stepping 02 Performance Events: Broken BIOS detected, complain to your hardware vendor. [Firmware Bug]: the BIOS has corrupted hw-PMU resources (MSR c0010001 is 430076) AMD PMU driver.

Scope

Any HP ProLiant server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Resolution

The messages do not affect the functionality or performance of the operating system or the server and can be safely ignored. Refer to the Red Hat Article, The boot message "Performance Events: PEBS fmt1+, Westmere events, Broken BIOS detected" is seen in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, for additional information, located at the following Red Hat URL: https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-55869 For the following ProLiant servers, the error message can be avoided by performing the steps detailed below: All HPE Gen10 servers All HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers All HPE ProLiant Gen8 servers HPE ProLiant DL580 G7 server HPE ProLiant BL620 G7 server blade HPE ProLiant BL680 G7 server blade NOTE: For the servers listed above, perform the following to avoid the above message from being displayed: IMPORTANT : Disabling "Processor Power and Utilization Monitoring" limits the HP ProLiant server capabilities. Boot machine to RBSU (F9). Press CTRL+A. Select "Service Options." Select "Processor Power and Utilization Monitoring." Select "Disable." Press F10 to save and exit. Reboot.
