Document Version Release Date Details 4 09/17/2014 Updated with additional symptoms to help identify this issue. 3 08/11/2014 Updated IMPORTANT statement and Resolution to indicate HP strongly recommends updating the iLO 4 firmware to version 1.51 to prevent this issue from occurring 2 07/08/2014 Updated with additional information 1 06/24/2014 Original document release IMPORTANT : The firmware update in this advisory is considered a critical fix and is required to prevent or correct the issue detailed below. HP strongly recommends immediate application of this critical fix. Neglecting to perform the required action could leave the server in an unstable condition, which could potentially result in sub-optimal server performance, including server lock-ups. By disregarding this notification and not performing the recommended resolution, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future related errors. In rare instances, on a ProLiant Gen8-series server with HP Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) Firmware Versions 1.30, 1.32, 1.40 or 1.50, intermittent Non-Maskable Interrupt (NMI) events may occur. After rebooting the server, the operating system loads properly and no additional impact to system operation will occur. HP has provided a permanent solution to this issue in an updated version of iLO 4 firmware, available for download by following the instructions in the Resolution section of this advisory. HP strongly recommends updating the iLO 4 firmware to version 1.51, even if the issue has not occurred, in order to prevent this issue from occurring. If this issue occurs, the operating system will indicate that an NMI has happened; however, the specific indication will vary by OS: VMware ESXi operating systems will experience a Purple Screen of Death (PSOD). Linux operating systems will display a message indicating that an NMI occurred. Windows will become completely unresponsive or experience a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). The Integrated Management Log (IML) will contain NO information about the NMI event. This issue has been reported in both virtualized and non-virtualized operating system environments and can occur due to an unexpected PCIe event in the iLO 4 subsystem that may result in an NMI when iLO 4 is gathering system management information. This affects the Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) subsystem and is specific to iLO 4 Firmware Versions 1.30, 1.32, 1.40 and 1.50.
