Description:

Info

When HP RDX users partition a cartridge while the HP RDX device is operating in Fixed Disk Mode, it is possible to create a cartridge that is then incompatible with HP RDX devices operating in Removable Disk Mode. HP RDX USB 3.0 devices are capable of operating in Removable Disk Mode (factory default, for use with third-party backup applications) or Fixed Disk Mode (for use with native Windows OS backup applications). Firmware version 2.10 or above is required. Most users will not change the partition or file system of the HP RDX cartridge. However, when a user decides to modify the partition data, it is important to consider the operating mode of the HP RDX device. This could affect all customers with an HP RDX solution altering the state of the cartridge partition while in Fixed Disk Mode and using the same cartridge in HP RDX solutions employing Removable Disk Mode. This issue is most commonly caused by the creation of more than one GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition on the cartridge when in the fixed disk mode. Though the user may be creating one partition, two partitions are being created by Windows, one of which is a reserve partition, and the other is the GPT partition. When the cartridge is placed into an HP RDX dock device with Removable Disk Mode, the cartridge is not fully compatible. This can lead to failed backups. The factory default partition and file system is compatible with both Removable Disk Mode and Fixed Disk Mode. HP RDX cartridges are shipped from the factory pre-partitioned and pre-formatted: HP RDX cartridges with a capacity less than 2 TB contain a single Master Boot Record (MBR) partition with a NTFS file system. HP RDX cartridges with a capacity greater than 2 TB contain a single GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition with a NTFS file system. Most users will not change the partition or file system of the HP RDX cartridge. However, for instances where a user decides to modify the partition data, it is important to consider the operating mode of the HP RDX device.

Scope

This issue affects PL7A Storage Media (RDX Media).

Resolution

Download the RDX Utility from www.hpe.com/support/rdx to determine the current mode of the HP RDX device. If access to previously written data is needed, it may be necessary to change the device to Fixed Disk Mode. For information about “Fixed Disk” and “Removable Disk” modes, see the Help section of the HP RDX Utility, version 2.32 or later. If you wish to switch to Removable Disk Mode (from Fixed Disk Mode), first check data access on any cartridges that were partitioned or formatted while in Fixed Disk Mode. To recover the cartridge back to its original factory partition state, the following process must be conducted: The HP RDX device MUST be in Removable Disk Mode. Open an Administrator command shell. All data on the cartridge will be permanently lost. Once completed, you can format the cartridge with a format tool such as Windows inbuilt quick formatter.
