HPE is taking proactive steps to comply with these new regulations. HPE Smart Storage Batteries slowly discharge when shelved for long periods of time. If the battery discharges completely, a "313" error message may be displayed during the Power-On Self-Test (POST) when the discharged battery is installed in a server during POST. The battery's status may also be identified in HPE Integrated Lights Out (iLO) under the Smart Controller area: POST Error: 313 - HPE Smart Storage Battery X Failure Battery Shutdown Event Code: XXXX Possible Causes: Battery is faulty. Action: Restart the system. If a fully discharged battery is installed in a server, the Battery-Backed cache module on an HPE Smart Array Controller may not be enabled. The server with a discharged battery may function, but the Smart Array Controller cache will not be enabled so that the contents will not be lost in the event of an AC power loss. The HPE Smart Storage Battery spares and options kits have a label indicating an "INSTALL ON OR BEFORE" date, as shown below: Batteries beyond this date may function if they are stored at lower temperatures; however, HPE cannot ensure battery functionality beyond the date noted. NOTE: Servers configured with and HPE Smart Array Option Kits that ship with an HPE Smart Storage Battery are not impacted by the new regulations.

Resolution
HPE suggests the following recommendations to lengthen battery storage time: Store the battery at 25°C. Install the battery in a powered server or a server in a powered enclosure to allow the battery to fully charge. Avoid storing batteries beyond the "INSTALL ON OR BEFORE" date noted on the label. NOTE: HPE Smart Storage Batteries charge fully when installed in an HPE Server Blade that is placed in a powered enclosure (whether the server is powered on or not). HPE Smart Storage Batteries in other servers charge fully when the server is powered on. NOTE : A fully charged 12W battery will have a shelf life of 24 months when stored at 25 degrees C. A fully charged 96W battery will have a shelf life of 44 months when stored at 25 degrees C. CAUTION : If HPE personnel request a battery to be returned, ship via ground or sea.
