IMPORTANT : The HPE Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) upgrade provided in the Resolution is recommended to prevent the HPE ProLiant Server from becoming unresponsive during POST or Runtime. HPE recommends performing this upgrade at the customer's earliest possible convenience. Neglecting to perform the recommended action and not performing the recommended resolution could result in the potential issue for subsequent errors to occur. HPE ProLiant Gen9-series servers may stop responding (either during boot or at runtime) when the optional HPE Smart Storage Battery fails. When this occurs, the Integrated Management Log (IML) will display the following messages: POST Error: 312-HPE Smart Storage Battery 1 Failure - Communication with the battery failed. Its output may not be enabled. Action: Verify battery is properly installed. Refer to user guide. Contact HPE support if condition persists. Smart Storage Battery failure (Battery 1). Action: 1. Consult server troubleshooting guide. 2 Gather AHS log and contact Support Smart Storage Battery has exceeded the maximum amount of devices supported (Battery 1 service information: 0x07). Action: 1. Remove additional devices. 2. Consult server troubleshooting guide. 3. Gather AHS log and contact Support This issue has only been observed on HPE ProLiant Gen9-series servers with HPE Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) Firmware version 2.40 or 2.42 and a System ROM version of 2.20 (or earlier). Under normal conditions, if the HPE Smart Storage Battery fails, the server should continue to operate and log an event in the IML.

Scope

Any HPE ProLiant Gen9-series server with iLO 4 Firmware Version 2.40 or 2.42, and any System ROM Version Earlier than Version 2.20 or earlier.

Resolution

To prevent the server from becoming unresponsive, upgrade to iLO 4 Firmware Version 2.44 (or later). The iLO 4 Firmware Version 2.44 is available as follows: Click the following link: http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/portal/site/hpsc Enter a product name (e.g., "iLO 4") in the text field under Enter a Product Name or Number. Click Go . Select the appropriate product model from the Results list (if prompted). Click the "drivers, software & firmware" hyperlink under the Download Options tab. Select the system's specific operating system from the Operating Systems dropdown menu. Click the category for iLO 4, Firmware - Lights-Out Management . Select the latest release of the Online ROM Flash Component for HPE Integrated Lights-Out Version 2.44. Click Download .
