The 4 Gb USB Flash drive that ships with Hewlett Packard Enterprise B-series SAN products requires a specific directory structure to be in place in order to be recognized by Fabric OS (FOS). Some 4 Gb USB drives were shipped without this formatting implemented and thus are not usable as shipped. Additionally, some flash drives were formatted with the proper directory structure, but they also include extraneous files in the "support" sub-folder. These drives will be recognized by FOS, but the support folder should be cleared prior to using the USB drive. The USB drive is used for FOS upgrades and saving logs and system configurations. The required directory structure consists of a top level "brocade" folder, with four sub-folders as shown below. brocade config firmware firmwareKey support Without this directory structure in place, the USB drive will not be accessible to FOS, and the use of the USB drive for these actions will not be possible. Normal functional operation of the switch will not be impacted. The USB Flash is enabled through the CLI command "usbstorage -enable". In the event the USB drive is not formatted properly, a warning message will be displayed on the terminal when the enable command is issued. Fail to enable USB storage device. Error: Device is not found or not formatted. A properly formatted drive will display the following message when enabled: USB storage device enabled
This issue affects 4 Gb USB Flash drives that HPE shipped as individual Flash drives and bundled with HPE StoreFabric SN8000B 8-Slot SAN Directors and HPE StoreFabric SN8000B 4-Slot SAN Director switches. These flash drives may be used in any 8 Gb, 16 Gb or 32 Gb B-series SAN switches with a USB port running FOS 7.4 or later. The Flash vendor has confirmed this issue is limited to two lots. These can be identified by the marking on the USB drive. Affected units will have a WO# of either PMK1625U27 or PMK1625U28.
Recovering an improperly formatted USB flash drive only requires installing the correct directory structure: Manually create a "brocade" director at the root level with four sub-folders as shown below: brocade config firmware firmwareKey support The steps to recover an improperly formatted USB flash drive are as follows: Insert the flash drive. See if any of the directories have files, and if they do, delete and recreate the directories with the Delete and the New folder feature. Select all of the files and directories below the brocade directory. Right-click the selected items, and select Delete . This action will trigger a delete confirmation window warning of items about to be deleted. (Any files or folders can be deleted.) Re-add folders config , firmware , firmwareKey, and support with the New folder option.
