Currently, coverage of sharded DDL operation in the arch guide is very poor. We only have this README.md's section on DDLs There’s no mention of “primary shards” in that diagram, e.g., or discussion about how DDL and shard versioning interact. This ticket is to update the architecture guide with text and diagrams that describe the DDL protocols as they behave today. Future work that changes the protocols should also update this part of the guide.
