Description:

Purpose

This article provides advice and information on understanding and improving SureBackup performance.

Solution

SureBackup  Performance Considerations The Repository where the backup files are stored, and the Mount Server used by that Repository, should be in the same data center as the ESXi host used by the Virtual Lab. Be mindful of the System Requirements for the Backup Repository and the Mount Server.  The host selected in the VirtualLab configuration is the host where the VMs tested by the SureBackup job will be attached. So, assign the VirtualLab to the host with the most available resources. The VMs tested by the SureBackup job are running off the backup files. Their performance is directly correlated to the read speed from the Repository's underlying storage and write speed to the write cache. It is strongly advised to enable the "Redirect write cache" option within the Virtual Lab settings, and select the fastest datastore in the environment. Enabling this option will allow the SureBackup job to store the redo logs for each VM on the specified datastore instead of the Mount Server. Attempting to perform SureBackup from backup files stored on any dedupe storage device will be slow, as each block must be rehydrated as the VM is powered on. For information about improving restore performance from dedupe storage, review: KB2660 and KB1745
