Description:

Challenge

Backups using a specific hardware provider do not work, provider is missing from the user interface:

Cause

During a Hyper-V host rescan, available VSS providers are enumerated via a VSS API query. Then, all VSS volumes for which those providers can be used are retrieved. In some rare scenarios, the results from the VSS API query may be inaccurate. In such cases, the registry value in the solution can override this VSS API compatibility check and allow the user to select any available VSS provider. However, using that provider may still fail if it turns out that the VSS provider is not actually compatible.

Solution

To override the VSS provider compatibility check and force Veeam Backup & Replication to display all available hardware VSS providers, create the following registry value on the Veeam Backup & Replication server: Key Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\ Value Name: UIShowAllVssProvidersForVolume Value Type: DWORD (32-bit) Value Value Data: 1 The registry value will be automatically detected and become effective within 15 minutes. Rescan the Hyper-V host again, and the complete list of VSS providers should be available.

More Information

Please note that this registry value disables the advanced compatibility detection algorithm, which automatically selects the best compatible VSS provider. Therefore, it should only be created in situations where it is necessary.
