Purpose

This article is intended to document how Forward Incremental works, and how its retention is enforced.

Solution

There are two distinct methods of Forward Incremental: Forever Forward Incremental Forward Incremental with Periodic Fulls

Forever Forward Incremental

The following is an animation demonstrating the way Forever Forward Incremental creates restore points and enforces retention. Note: In older versions of documentation, this retention method was referred to as Forward Incremental-Forever. Within this animation, the lettered squares represent blocks on a disk.

Forward Incremental with Periodic Fulls

Forward Incremental with Active Full This animation demonstrates how an Active Full is created.   Forward Incremental with Synthetic Full This animation demonstrates how a Synthetic Full is created.   Forward Incremental with Periodic Full Retention Enforcement This animation demonstrates how retention is enforced. Take note of how the number of restores points exceeds the retention setting until enough restore points in the new chain cause all points in the old chain to fall outside of retention. Within the above animations, the lettered squares represent blocks on a disk.
