Backup to Data Domain fails with “Error: calling system(), returns nonzero. Err: 5040 Failed to connect to storage.”

Description:

Challenge

During the "preparing storage for backup" phase of a Veeam backup job to a Data Domain, the job fails, displaying the following error message: Error: calling system(), returns nonzero. Err: 5040 Failed to connect to storage

Cause

The Data Domain chooses to use a different NIC than configured. Veeam is unable to communicate with the appliance as a result.   Veeam job log example: InfoPreparing storage 'backupfile.vbk' for write. Is optimized for de-duplication media 'False'. Info[AP] (9150) command: 'prepStorageForWriteEx\nddboost://backupfile.vbk\n8192\n0\n' Info[AP] (9150) error: calling system(), returns nonzero. Err: 5040

Solution

Re-add the repository to Veeam Backup & Replication with the production network IP address.
