Description:

Purpose

This article provides general advice for optimizing Veeam Backup & Replication configuration for environments using VMware VSAN.

Solution

Use Virtual Machine-based VMware Backup Proxies. VMware Backup Proxy System Requirements   If you notice excessive network link utilization during backup operations, consider the following: Create one VMware Backup Proxy for each ESXi host in the VSAN cluster to reduce the workload on the ESXi I/O stack during backup. Consider creating a VM-Host Affinity Rule to prevent the VMware Backup Proxy from being moved off its assigned ESXi host.   For most larger environments that utilize 10GbE connections throughout the environment, there should be plenty of throughput to allow for fewer proxies. For example, if there is a single VSAN datastore, then Veeam Backup & Replication will only allow a maximum of 32 active snapshots, meaning that at most 32 VMs at one time can be processed. Therefore, to optimize job performance, ensure that the total number of tasks that all proxies can complete in the environment is 32 and that the destination repositories are configured to allow that many tasks as well.

More Information

Starting with Veeam Backup & Replication 11a,  the task scheduler now uses the dedicated threshold of a maximum number of open VM snapshots per vSAN datastores, with the default limit of 32 snapshots. You can control this setting with the VSANMaxSnapshotsNum (DWORD) registry value under the 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication' key on the backup server. Key Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication Value Name: VSANMaxSnapshotsNum Value Type: DWORD (32-Bit) Value Value Default Data: 32
