Last update date:

3/17/2023

Affected products:

Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows

Affected releases:

5.0

Fixed releases:

No fixed releases provided.

Description:

Challenge

After upgrading to Windows 11, the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows service may fail to start. The following errors can be found in C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Endpoint\Svc.VeeamEndpointBackup.log: Error Failed to start service. Error Error occurred during LocalDB instance startup: SQL Server process failed to start. Error (System.Exception)

Cause

The Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows service fails to start because the MS SQL LocalDB instance is unable to start, which occurs due to sector size reported by the storage driver. SQL Server is only able to work with 512 or 4096 sector sizes. Any values other than 512 or 4096 are not supported per Microsoft and may cause such failures.

Solution

Errors during installation or starting SQL Server on Windows 11 related to system disk sector size greater than 4 KB are being investigated and addressed by Microsoft in the following article - Troubleshoot errors related to system disk sector size greater than 4 KB.
