Unable to Add Object Storage With Versioning to Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365

Last update date:

5/29/2023

Affected products:

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365

Affected releases:

7.0

Fixed releases:

No fixed releases provided.

Description:

Challenge

When adding an Object Storage Repository, the following error occurs: The selected bucket supports blob versioning. Select a bucket with disabled blob versioning.

Cause

This issue occurs because the cloud storage has Versioning enabled. Starting with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v7, when creating an Object Storage Repository, the software verifies if Versioning is enabled. If Versioning is detected, but the immutability option is not enabled, the creation of the Object Storage Repository is blocked. This check aims to prevent two issues: (1) data corruption caused by a Versioning rollback altering backup files and (2) unmanaged versions.

Solution

Consider the following: If the Object Storage Repository will be used to store primary Backup data, disable Versioning (if possible*). If the Object Storage Repository will be used to store secondary Backup Copy data, enable immutability.   *Versioning is enabled by default for some object storage vendors, such as Backblaze, and cannot be disabled. Veeam Support can provide a workaround to disable the security check that prevents the creation of an Object Storage Repository. However, this workaround does not mitigate the risk of backup data corruption caused by a Versioning rollback. Therefore, it is critical to never perform a Versioning rollback that would modify backup data. For more information, please create a Veeam Support Case.
