Why does SMARTS report an interface DOWN when I know it is UP?

Last update date:

3/22/2024

Affected products:

Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Affected releases:

No affected releases provided.

Fixed releases:

No fixed releases provided.

Description:

Symptoms

Smarts reports an interface DOWN, but using other means it is confirmed to be UP (active)In SAM Notification Log, an event exists for Interface Down

Cause

If an interface is managed, Smarts polls for its AdminStatus and OperStatus from the SNMP Agent. When polling the interface in question, if the SNMP Agent responds that the AdminStatus = 1 (UP), and the OperStatus = 2 (DOWN), Smarts will notify the Interface as DOWN.

Resolution

Investigate the SNMP Agent of the device. If the OperStatus = 2, SMARTS is reporting properly for the data it is receiving. To confirm this, you can "walk" the device by running the following command: <BASEDIR>/IP/smarts/bin: sm_snmpwalk -c <community string> <device>

Related Information

Example sm_snmpwalk sm_snmpwalk -c PuBLiC Router1 This command will create Router1.mimic, Router1.walk and Router1.snap. Verify in any one of these files for .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.8 (ifOperStatus) on the ifIndex in question. If OperStatus still shows 2 ( DOWN ), contact EMC Smarts Technical Support.
