Symptoms

Smarts SAM/Smarts OI Syslog Adapter will not start and very little relevant information is logged unless debug is enabled With debug enabled iby setting debug to TRUE n the cisco_syslog_mgr.asl file, the following entries are seen in the Smarts Syslog Adapter log file:[24-Aug-2009 05:46:26 PM BST] 10.214.255.138:51252/OI: instanceExists(ICS_Domain,ICS-Syslog-Normalization)24-Aug-2009 05:46:26 PM BST cisco_syslog_mgr.asl: Bad entry received in generic_syslog_mgr.asl => /apps/InCharge65/SAM/smarts/local/rules/icoi-syslog/tail.pl: exec failed: Permission denied!24-Aug-2009 05:46:26 PM BST 0[24-Aug-2009 05:46:26 PM BST] 10.214.255.138:51252/OI: instanceExists(ICS_Domain,ICS-Syslog-Normalization)24-Aug-2009 05:46:26 PM BST cisco_syslog_mgr.asl: Bad entry received in generic_syslog_mgr.asl =>24-Aug-2009 05:46:26 PM BST cisco_syslog_mgr.asl: Syslog adapter Reached EOF, Terminating

Cause

As indicated in the Symptom statement with debug enabled, this issue is caused by incorrect permissions for the tail.pl file (/local/rules/icoi-syslog/tail.pl).

Resolution

To resolve this issue, ensure that the correct permissions are set for the required files.IMPORTANT! Remember to disable debugging when troubleshooting actions are complete.
