Symptoms

Devices get added to the pending list in Smarts IP, even though they are correctly discovered and no DiscoveryError is shown The following is found in the Smarts IP debug logs: [July 9, 2012 12:13:42 PM GMT+02:00 +055ms] t@700 Discovery #7ASNM-E-ASNMP_SEND_RECEIVE_ERROR-Error when sending or receiving SNMP data for Host '10.212.0.197' (Maybe bad credentials).SNMP-ERESPONSE-No response from 10.212.0.197, port 161SNMP-ETIMEOUT-Timed out[July 9, 2012 12:13:42 PM GMT+02:00 +055ms] t@700 Discovery #7AD_MSG-*-AD_LOG-at 'discovery/ic-mib2-hyper-data.asl: t@700', while discovering '10.212.0.197', SNMP request timed out or had an error

Cause

The device is in pending list because of ASNM-E-ASNMP_SEND_RECEIVE_ERROR-Error. By default IP 8.x and IP 9.x have the ASNMP feature enabled. This feature is used to discover devices as fast as possible. However, some devices may not respond quickly enough, resulting in the errors above and the device getting added to the pending list.

Resolution

If you encounter this issue in your environment, disable the ASNMP feature on the problem devices as follows: Open the tpmgr-param.conf configuration file using sm_edit.Add the following line: DoNotUseASNMPPattern <device OID> Example DoNotUseASNMPPattern .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.516 Save and close the tpmgr-param.conf configuration file.Restart the Smarts IP Manager and discover the devices in question. Adding the DoNotUseASNMPPattern as described in the preceding steps will only disable the ASNMP feature for devices with the sysOID specified in the tpmgr-param.conf file.
