Description:

Symptoms

Unable to add SCSI bus sharing (Device ‘SCSI Controller 1’ is a SCSI controller engaged in bus-sharing)

Purpose

When adding RDM shared disks to configure a Microsoft Failover Clustering, it can fail with an error message.

Cause

As per the linked documentation, we need to power off the VM and then add the SCSI bus sharing. To use physical bus sharing we need to have VMs on different ESXi hosts. https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/7.0/com.vmware.vsphere.hostclient.doc/GUID-21970178-EA9A-4CD6-8EBB-A714B267CF29.htmlIn some cases it fails due to a snapshot taken with some changes in the Virtual Machines. After deleting the snapshot, the required configuration has been successful.

Resolution

Confirm that the VM is powered off. Make sure the VMs are on different ESXI hosts if using Physical SCSI bus sharing, and on the same host is using Virtual. Make sure there are no snapshots on the VM SCSI bus sharing is being added to.
