Last update date:

11/3/2020

Affected products:

WatchGuard Dimension

Affected releases:

Any/Unknown

Fixed releases:

All

Description:

Issue

Systems initially deployed using the Dimension 2.1.2 image might be unable to upgrade to Dimension 2.1.2 Update 4 because of a lack of available space in the system root partition. The root partition only updates through Dimension releases and the unattended security updates provided by Ubuntu. You cannot resize or clear this partition. When you try to upgrade Dimension 2.1.2, you receive one of these error messages: Reason: Error installing packages from file /var/opt/watchguard/dimension/upload/ E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution)There is not enough available disk space on /var to install the upgrade fileThe affected system version is Dimension 2.1.2 running on the Linux 4.4.0-21 kernel. Dimension version: v2.1.2Operating system: Linux 4.4.0-21-generic (x86_64)If you receive the disk space error message, check your partition sizes and Dimension version in the Status Report section in the Dimension web UI. Go to System Settings > Diagnostics > Status Report and scroll to the Disk Usage section.

Workaround/Solution

Deploy a new Dimension 2.2 system and either restore the log data from a backup, or migrate the data disk from the old instance to the replacement following the instructions below. To successfully upgrade with this workaround, at least 100 MB of free space is required on the /var partition. The Disk Usage section of the Status Report shows how much available space is left.Go to System Settings > Diagnostics > Status Report and scroll to the Disk Usage section.Disk UsageFilesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on/dev/sda4 922M 470M 437M 52% /varIf you do not have at least 100 MB of free disk space on the /var partition, you cannot migrate your data to the new instance using this workaround.Note: If you proceed with the workaround with less than 100 MB of free disk space, the upgrade will fail with this error:There is not enough available disk space on /var to install the upgrade file.If you see this error, restore your log data from a backup. If you do not have a backup, you must deploy a new instance of Dimension v2.2. Workaround steps: From the WatchGuard Software Downloads Center, download the watchguard-dimension_2_1_2_U4_apt.tgz file.Use a utility such as Winzip or 7-zip to extract the watchguard-dimension_2_1_2_U4_amd64.deb file to your computer. In a web browser, connect to your existing instance of Dimension at https:// <IP address of Dimension> and log in.Select System Settings. In the System Maintenance section, click Upgrade.Click Choose File and select the Dimension upgrade file watchguard-dimension_2_1_2_U4_amd64.deb you saved to your computer in Step 2.Wait for the upgrade to complete. If the upgrade requires Dimension services to restart, you will be directed to the login page.To verify that the upgrade was successful, make sure the System Settings > Dimension System Information page shows that the Version is 2.1.2 (622159). Note: If your v2.1.2 Update 4 upgrade fails due to lack of free disk space, deploy a new v2.2 instance and complete the Setup Wizard with an empty database. For more information, see Install WatchGuard Dimension .Important: You must complete the Setup Wizard for the new Dimension v2.2 instance before you migrate your data. If you move your existing database disk to the new instance before you run the Setup Wizard, all data is deleted.Note: When you run the Setup Wizard on the new Dimension instance, you must set the Log Server Authentication Key to the same one that was set on your old instance. The key is not stored on the data disk. Migrate your database to the new v2.2 instance. For more information about steps to migrate the database, see Move the Dimension Database to a New Dimension Server.
